Results and statistics from the 2009 Canberra Carp-Out

 

Major Prize Winner

The winner of the $5,000 major prize (donated by Tackle World Canberra) for 2009 was Nathan McCormack. Additional prizes were awarded for mystery weights in junior and adult categories, as well as an "early-bird" prize for entering prior to the event.

Event Proceeds

Once again in 2009, 50% of the proceeds of the Carp-Out were donated to the Eden Monaro Cancer Support Group, with the other 50% being utilised for stocking of native fish into ACT's urban ponds.

2009 Entrant Details

A total of 1,799 entrants registered for the 2009 Canberra Carp-Out, compared to 1,411 in 2008. A breakdown of entrants by type is below:

  • 1,799 entrants, with 1,341 pre-registered and 458 entering on the day;
  • 1,195 adults (879 male, 316 female), being 66% of total entries;
  • 604 juniors (394 male, 210 female), being 34% of total entries.

2009 Capture Details

In 2009, a total of 1065.9kg of pest fish (European Carp and Redfin) were removed from Lake Burley Griffin (yes, we cracked the magic tonne!). Statistics on the captures are as follows:

  • 1,653 fish caught in total (543 Carp and 1,110 Redfin), compared to 793 fish in 2008 (336 Carp, 457 Redfin);
  • 923.6kg of carp caught, average weight of 1.7kg;
  • 142.3kg of Redfin caught, average weight = 0.13kg;
  • Heaviest Carp = 6.05kg, heaviest Redfin = 1.19kg;
  • Adults caught 1,041 fish (756.6kg) and juniors caught 612 fish (309.3kg).
